World War 1: Ieper (Ypres), Belgium

Belgium, a country in northwest Europe on the North Sea. In antiquity, Belgium the Middle Ages. The region occupied by today's Belgium passed to the Habsburgs in the 15th century and then the French in the 18th century. Ypres or Ieper, a common Belgian town in the Flemish province of West Flanders. During the First World War, Ypres was the center of serious and sustained battles between German and Allied forces. During the war, British soldiers dubbed the "city wipers."

Allied forces took Ypres by the Germans in the first battle of Ypres (October 31 to November 22, 1914). In the second battle of Ypres (April 22 to May 25, 1915 high ground) the German population used poison gas for the first time on the Western front and took the east of Ypres. The first gas attack took place against the British, Canadian and French soldiers, including soldiers and the French metropolitan Senegal and Algerian infantry (light infantry) in Africa French. Battles in the First World War, the largest, best known and most costly in human suffering is the third battle of Ypres (July 21 to November 6, 1917, also known as the Battle of Passchendaele) in which British forces, the Canadians, ANZAC and French took over the ridge Passchendaele is the city at a terrible cost of life. After several months of fighting, the battle resulted in nearly half a million victims of all sides, and several miles of ground won by Allied forces. Ypres was almost entirely destroyed by artillery fire.

Many sites and memorials of the First World War and museums are worth visiting Ypres.

1. Menin Gate Memorial – Memorial July 24, 1927 dedicated to fallen soldiers and the British Commonwealth who fell in Belgium during the First World War, it has a ceremony Last Post every evening at 8:00 p.m. as a way for citizens of Ypres to express their gratitude to those who died for the freedom of Belgium.

2. Flanders Fields Museum – It is located in the heart of the Ypres cloth hall. This museum gives an excellent overview of the First World War, it is a kind of experience which takes you straight into the daily life during the war.

3. Passchendaele Memorial Museum – A museum in a beautiful setting, transportation history the Great War in chronological order. It has lots of information about different battles and a wide selection of authentic objects on the screen.
